Arbutus Unedo F. Rubra

It’s easy to see why Arbutus unedo f. rubra holds an RHS AGM. This majestic evergreen forms a bushy tree or large shrub with plenty of year round interest. Beneath the evergreen foliage, the branches are enveloped in beautiful red-brown bark which gleams in the sun with a shedding, rough texture at maturity. The pretty urn shaped flowers emerge in autumn against a backdrop of leathery foliage, providing valuable late-season nectar for pollinating insects. The flowers later form rounded strawberry-like fruits which mature in the following year as new flowers develop. Although perfectly hardy once mature, Strawberry trees will appreciate a layer of fleece for winter protection when young. Perfect for coastal gardens and sheltered woodland areas.
